  • Why is the maintenance of the stormwater system important?

Maintaining the stormwater system is crucial to ensure its proper functioning and adherence to design specifications. This helps facilitate the intended flow of water and prevents flooding during rain events.

  • What is a catch basin?

The purpose of a catch basin is to effectively capture sediment and debris carried by stormwater. This sediment and debris settle at the bottom of the basin, allowing the water to continue its flow through the system without obstruction. By effectively separating unwanted particles, the catch basin ensures the smooth passage of water.

  • What purpose does a stormwater pond serve?

Stormwater ponds are designed with the purpose of collecting, retaining, and treating significant volumes of stormwater.

  • What should we do on an annual basis to keep us in compliance?

Each site has unique structures and factors that must be taken into account when establishing a routine maintenance plan. It is essential to complete the Annual Stormwater Inspection Report on a yearly basis, as it is a requirement by local municipalities. This report will identify any maintenance needs that may arise.

  • What will the city or county do if we do not perform maintenance?

To ensure compliance, local municipalities take proactive measures such as sending out correspondence and conducting on-site inspections. Non-compliance may result in the enforcement of various penalties available to them.

  • I’m new to the HOA board/property management. How can we learn more about stormwater?

Local municipalities organize an annual workshop class that is open to the public, free of charge. The purpose of this workshop is to provide education and guidance to HOAs and businesses regarding stormwater management.

  • Is it actually important to maintain our stormwater system?

Indeed, it is! Often, we tend to overlook the importance of stormwater management until we face a catastrophic event. It's similar to the regular maintenance of changing the oil in your car.

  • We’ve been here for a long time and never had to do anything before. Why now?

For many years, there was a lack of private stormwater maintenance, resulting in minimal efforts to address the issue. However, as time progresses, we are gaining a better understanding of the pollutants that enter our waterways through stormwater.

  • We’re a small HOA with small HOA dues. Are there any programs available to help with the cost?

Indeed, each jurisdiction provides a range of programs aimed at assisting with associated costs. The HOA will need to proactively reach out and apply for the various programs available to them.

  • Why is it required to dredge sediment/vegetation out of the pond?

A wet pond has an estimated lifespan before dredging becomes necessary. Over time, sediment accumulates and settles at the bottom of the pond. This gradual buildup ultimately reduces the water-holding capacity originally engineered for the pond.

  • What happens if our wet pond liner has failed?

When the liner of a pond fails, it signifies a failure of the entire pond system. In such cases, the entire pond system needs to be dismantled and rebuilt.

  • We had no idea that there were stormwater filters. Can anyone replace them?

Stormwater filters are typically installed underground. These filters can be quite heavy, weighing hundreds of pounds. To become a maintenance provider for these filters, certification from the filter company is required.

  • What are stormwater filters, and what is the purpose of them?

Stormwater filters offer a more compact solution for treating stormwater compared to larger structures like ponds. This allows developers to maximize the usable areas of their property.
